Public Transport in San Francisco

Muni Heritage Fleet Weekend.

A rare double ended trolley in Muni Wings livery, starting off its run from Castro headed to Fisherman's Wharf.

It is four in the afternoon and I understand many of the historic fleet will travel up Market to either 17th or Church following the J-Church out to the Barn on Ocean Ave.  I decided to walk up Market Street from Castro to see the Parade.

This PCC is in Kansas City livery headed toward downtown after turning around at Castro & Market Streets.

One of a few from Milan.

Single ended PCC to contrast with the double-ended in the first video.

Sexy streamlined rear-end.

Here's what I think is called a "Dinky".  It is a single truck electric trolly, not to be confused with the older cable cars which I will show below.

Another PCC, here in Boston livery.  These PCC are the work horse of the F-Market line.

Now for the famous cable cars.  This is the California line at its terminus at Market near the Embarcadero.  Look at the horizon and you see the steep hill of California Street leading to the top of Nob Hill.

Here's the Powel Mason line at the Market Street round table.

Now the fun ones, here the Blackpool Boat in front of the Ferry Building.  This one goes out only on special occasions and I have yet to get a ride on one.  It is very popular.

Here it is going up Market Street.  Muni has three of the eight built by the City of Blackpool.

Here's the second one and I think the third is in the shop being repaired.

I think the next is the oldest Muni electric trolley turning off the Embarcadero.

Here again with the Bay Bridge in the background.

Just to get real, here is one of the work horse for Muni, the modern trolley bus.

Labor Day 2024

This last weekend, Labor Day holiday here in the USA, I saw one of three boat trolley that MUNI operates.   Just this June, I was in Blackpool, England, the original owner and operator to eight boat trolley.   I am proud that San Francisco cherishes its public transport.   That got me an idea to post all of my train photos with a bit of trivia or explanation to each car.

The boat cars here are delicate and don't run regular fare service.   They are used for private outings and holiday celebrations along Market Street and the Embarcadero.  I am guessing since there are no passengers and it is at the Castro end of the line, that it is going back to the barn.

Here's a beast of train from Melbourne out on a charter run.

From Milan, this train is running regular F service on Market Street from Castro to Fisherman's Wharf.  A jewel-box car with rattling glass and a loud pumping sound.  It is on the slow side, similar to the boat above and with excellent views.

Below right is the PCC car in F service on Market Street and to the left is MUNI's brand new Siemens car in J service on Church Street.  Past meets Future.

And of course the World Famous Cable Cars.  This vintage poster will sit in place until I find my own photo of these historic cars still in revenue service.

there's more coming,  I am having difficultly filter my photo library.
