In 2018, I started maintaining this front cottage garden. It was planted with the typical one-offs that survived our dry summers, that included horrible things like phormiums and loropetalum with the ever present tibochina. But I took on this space for its potential. A single story Victorian with stereotypical San Francisco wood details with the white picket fence.
Now the days have overtaken the night, things have gone boom.
This was taken last year on May 30, peak bloom.
More stills from May 30, 2023:
First visit I tossed the Phormium, cut back the rosemary and lavender, move one camellia from it twin planted a foot away, across the garden in a more sheltered spot. We on he crest of Potrero Hill with warm afternoon sun, but breezy. The Pacific Ocean is 7 miles west of here.
Started planting bulbs like freesia, ixia, Narcissus, irises and self-sowing annuals phacelia, nigella and alyssum.
Mulch and weed throughout the winter rains.
This is my last visit March 2024. Bulbs are going: Ixia, Amenome, Allium.
November, 2021, the neat forms of the evergreens.
February, 2022, Narcissus, Camellia and spring annuals.
