White Flower Terrace

In 2016 we decided to expand the white flower garden around the stairs, which consisted mainly of two iceburg roses and a large viburnum along with the usual annuals, to included the next terrace in front of the studio.  Here we had more real estate to have some fun.  I started adding more as each season came and this year it is looking full.

Garden Wildlife

Arriving late in the afternoon, I find Salsa already out in the garden.  This LoverBoy, Salsa, is not doing well.  His Cancer is taking its toll.   I love seeing him out in the garden "stalking" butterflies.  He doesn't kill.  Just watches.  I love his spirit.

Plant Palette - My Roses

I love my roses.  They produce so many outstanding flowers and fragrance.  I've only been planting David Austin roses the last couple of years.   Here's the roses blooming in my gardens this spring.

We'll start off with my favorite at the moment.  Queen of Sweden what do I like about you?  I love the upright tight cups of pink.  Delicate pink above a glaucous leaf.   Stunning.

Rosa 'Queen of Sweden'

This lovely, so lovely pink rose with matte glaucus leaves is just starting it's first flush of 2018.  Along with Wisteria, Santa Barbara Daisy, Verbena lilacina 'De La Mina' and a blue Forget-Me-Not.

Roses in Glen Park

This week the roses busted out!  Wow!   Five rose bushes in the perennial garden are starting or are well into their first flush of the year.

Early April Glen Park Rose

First week of April we have a rose blossom.   I planted this Rosa 'Mme Alfred Carriere' in February 2016.  This is the first of dozens of blooms on 7 vigorous canes, some up to 17 feet long.   This rose from David Austin in Texas, established itself in 18 months.

Glen Park Spring Explosion

This Winter has been warm. It started off dry but more rain has arrived toward the end. Spring has been warm, sunny with moisture in the soil. Lots are plants are blooming. I'll call out the ones I know below:

White Flowers: Michelia crassipes (I hear its back in Magnolia), Erigeron karvinskianus, Omphalodes linifolia 'Venus's Navelwort', Heliotropium arborescens 'Album', and Loropetalum.

What's blooming in February in San Francisco, California?

Agapanthus. That's right, in February!? Normally June or July. Add it to the list of plants that get confused in our climate.

Yes. A Rose climbing up the loropetalum and lemon in front of the bamboo and plum.  It's a lovely rose but I don't know it's name.

Year in Review for Eureka Valley Garden

I have been tending this garden for twelve years now. This post gives the highlights of the seasons for 2016. This terraced garden with view of San Francisco skyline feels like a sunken garden and pack in many blooming shrubs, vines, bulbs and annuals.

Eureka Valley Terraced Garden

After a most glorious rainy winter, spring 2017 will be excessively floral. Above is Winchester Cathedral, a David Austin rose with erigeron, Scottish thistle and a orange poppy. Below is Forget-Me-Nots blooming just below a cottoneaster crown just leaving out.

Mike's Glen Park Showcase

Frank has put together another tour of San Francisco gardens. This one is exclusive to professional gardeners, horticulturists, arborists and the likes.

Finally cocktails, I mean the last garden, mine. This is my Glen Park garden on Chenery. I've been working this garden for almost 9 years now. All these photos were taken by Dino. Much appreciation to see my work through another's lense. Thank you Dino!

Potrero Hill Entry Garden

The goal of this garden is to have an ever constant flora display, twelve months a year. It is a challenge at times but the lady of the house loves it.  October is our most flexible month. So much works at this time of year.
