White Flower Terrace

 In 2016 we decided to expand the white flower garden around the stairs, which consisted mainly of two iceburg roses and a large viburnum along with the usual annuals, to included the next terrace in front of the studio.  Here we had more real estate to have some fun.  I started adding more as each season came and this year it is looking full.

Hardenbergia violacea 'White Out'

This Australian vine-like shrub loves our climate and regularly produces a huge abundance of flowers every January.   That's if you don't prune it too hard.   Only lightly shear to maintain shape.   This is my first time with this white cultivar and it will eventually, next two years or so, climb this arbor leading to the upper terrace of this garden. 

Garden Wildlife

 Arriving late in the afternoon, I find Salsa already out in the garden.  This LoverBoy, Salsa, is not doing well.  His Cancer is taking its toll.   I love seeing him out in the garden "stalking" butterflies.  He doesn't kill.  Just watches.  I love his spirit.

Plant Profile: Plectranthus neochilus

This lovely aromatic Plectranthus is an easy, non-stop flowering perennial here in San Francisco.   It is not at all cold tolerate and will turn to black mush anywhere near 32 degrees F.  Most places it must be considered an annual. What makes this plant so spectacular here is it's ability to root anywhere, any time of the year.   I toss my clippings where ever I want it to root and establish and it does!   I got mine at Plectranthus neochilus at Annie's Annuals.

San Francisco Gardener's Tour - Glen Park

Finally to my terrace garden in Glen Park.  This is my masterpiece.  Double wide lot on a south face slope.  The brunt of the Pacific is buffered by the cliffs of Glen Canyon.  An exceptional microclimate; it is the soil that is a challenge.   It has been at least two, maybe three years since I last showed this garden to a group and the changes are dramatic.  The changes include huge addition of white flowers, new roses, irise, alliums, poppies, ranunculus, scabiosa, Sidalcea hendersonii (Henderson's Checkermallow).   Pinks and purples are good too but no hot colors. This spring I began a project to extend the formal white garden 5 fold up into what was the mediterranean terrace and will become the white cottage garden.

This week the roses busted out!  Wow!   Five rose bushes in the perennial garden are starting or are well into their first flush of the year.

First week of April we have a rose blossom.   I planted this Rosa 'Mme Alfred Carriere' in February 2016.  This is the first of dozens of blooms on 7 vigorous canes, some up to 17 feet long.   This rose from David Austin in Texas, established itself in 18 months.  

Glen Park Spring Explosion

This Winter has been warm. It started off dry but more rain has arrived toward the end. Spring has been warm, sunny with moisture in the soil. Lots are plants are blooming. I'll call out the ones I know below:



White Flowers: Michelia crassipes (I hear its back in Magnolia), Erigeron karvinskianus, Omphalodes linifolia 'Venus's Navelwort', Heliotropium arborescens 'Album', and Loropetalum.

What's blooming in February in San Francisco, California?

Agapanthus. That's right, in February!? Normally June or July. Add it to the list of plants that get confused in our climate.

Spring & Summer MUG Gardens

Here's a posting showing my professional gardens (MUG) for Spring & Summer this year, 2017. Starting in March, this garden is in Glen Park with lush green growth from a phenomenal season of rain. This years additions include the blue Dutch iris, Orlaya, Magnolia and Exochorda.

 I have added more white agapanthus to fill in this bed.  This is a tough location.  High, dry, sunny with two Monterey Cypress sucking up everything.  But Agapanthus is a tough one too.  Let's go!

Glen Park Perennial Terraces

Spring is in full swing this second week of April. Roses have just started to open along with the many annuals like Cerinthe and Orlaya. As next few weeks will burst into color, I wanted to share last year's photographs of my garden in Glen Park, San Francisco. I have been working this garden regularly, almost every Thursday, for thirteen years. So much has changed in that time. This year you see a lot of attention on spring bulbs and vigorous annuals. Enjoy.

I ran across this perfect succulent garden on my way to a birthday party in Glen Park. The colors are amazing and the textures are flawless. Not to mention each plant was a true specimen. Kudos to the owner, design and installer, whomever they may be.

Great combination of Yucca, Aloe with 3 types of Agave.
